Interstate-4 Ultimate Bridge & Piers Project
- Carbon Steel - Galvanized
- Compressed Construction Schedule
- Ease of Installation
- Simplified System Maintenance
The I-4 Ultimate Improvement Project includes massive updates to the Interstate-4 highway system, that runs through the Orlando area, by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT).
Fire chiefs were concerned that the initial design of the I-4 upgrades did not include enough fire protection. There were stretches of I-4 that had more than a mile without immediate access to water. To address this situation, standpipe was utilized on the bridges and overpasses to connect a water supply to hose connections as an extension of the fire hydrant system.
Victaulic provided products and solutions that were utilized on standpipe for the fire suppression system on bridges and overpasses on I-4. On the standpipe, Style 75 Flexible Couplings and grooved fittings were able to be quickly and easily installed on the 4” – 8” galvanized steel pipe.
On the bridges and overpasses, the high traffic volume presented hazardous challenges to SGL Construction. SGL Construction was able to mitigate their risk and minimize the construction schedule by using Victaulic’s mechanically grooved products. Additionally, the Style 75 Flexible Couplings provide ease of access to the system for future expansion and maintenance.
