To tackle Istanbul’s busy traffic situation, the world’s first three-level, sub-sea tunnel including a metro line is built underneath the Bosphorus strait connecting Europe with Asia. The entire project is 14,6 kilometers long of which 5,4 kilometers is a 12 meters wide tunnel containing the metro line.
In the Avrasya Metro Tunnel, Victaulic’s solutions were utilized on the water, compressed air, and slurry lines. The solutions included the use of the Victaulic Vic-Ring System, a range of fittings, Series 761 Vic-300 MasterSeal™ Butterfly Valves, Style 75 Flexible Couplings, and Style 77 Flexible Couplings.
Victaulic’s solutions allowed for the accommodation of the curvature of the pipe and the thermal movement. In addition, piping systems in tunnel construction require reliable and maintenance-free solutions throughout the lifetime of the system.
On this project, Victaulic’s solutions allowed for modularized construction of the water, compressed air, and slurry lines. Contractor YMSK JV adopted the prefabrication model for this project, in which offsite preparation enabled faster installation and reduced man-hours on-site, saving the contractor valuable time and labor costs.
