Hidden far beneath the land in western Kazakhstan is a supergiant reservoir known as Tengiz Field, where the oil measures one mile (1.6 km) across.
In 2016, Kazakhstan’s largest private oil producer, Chevron, undertook a massive $36.8 billion expansion of its operations at Tengiz Field. With a current daily output of 540,000 barrels of crude oil at the field, Chevron believes the expansion will increase its production by approximately 260,000 barrels per day.
Victaulic® products were chosen for the supersized project, and over the past few years, we have leveraged our global footprint to collaborate in unprecedented ways to meet the expansion’s distinctive challenges. In addition to our full range of couplings and cast fittings, Victaulic developed a custom solution for the project, creating fittings to accommodate Kazakhstan’s extreme winter temperatures, which can drop to -58°F (-50°C). Victaulic engineering developed the new Style L07 Rigid Coupling as well as the Style LW07 AGS Rigid Coupling, both unique to this job.
“This major project, Victaulic’s largest to date, demonstrates how our company can operate on a global scale to serve customers on even their largest and most lucrative projects.” said Daniel Christian, Global Power Market Director.
The expansion project entails the fabrication of huge skids – up to 800 feet long, 100 feet wide and 50 feet tall – that utilize Victaulic products in the wastewater, firewater, process water, raw water, treated water, utility water, and demineralized water systems.
Onsite instruction and support have been critical factors in Victaulic’s involvement in the Chevron project. Regional Sales Manager Oil, Gas, Chemical Middle East, Baurzhan Adaibeko provided hands-on training to both the installers and upper management on our products, inspection techniques and installation.
This major project, Victaulic’s largest to date, demonstrates how the company can operate on a global scale to support its customers’ most complex projects. The global construction industry is changing rapidly and requires a high level of collaboration to ensure successful completion. Victaulic’s global presence was an advantage in accommodating this large-scale job, coordinating its engineering resources in unprecedented ways to meet the unique environmental challenges, and keep the project on schedule for its expected finish in 2022.
